The main classes into which Kentucky tobaccos are graded: 1) spinner (plug wrappers and fine spinners); spun cover for chewing tobacco, sometimes also for cigars. 2) wrappers and selfworkers (wrapper and binder material: as under 1) but smaller. 3) fillers (short leaf): filler material for chewing tobacco and to some extent also for cigars (short leaf). 4) Lugs (leaves and lugs): (small and lugs and primings): strong cutting tobacco and 5) trashes: as under 4) but for cheap and strong scrubs. Subdivision into about 40 classes according to qualities, colours and lengths completes the picture. The Kentucky tobaccos belong to the so-called hogshead tobaccos, i.e. they come to the market in wooden hogsheads of 650 to 750 kg each.
