The process, however, cannot be compared directly with complete fermentation. After the hogshead tobaccos (Virginia, Kentucky, Burley, etc.) have passed through the re-drying plant, been conditioned and hydraulically pressed in a moist, warm condition into the hogsheads, a so-called refermentation takes place. During this process the temperature of the tobacco rises only by a few degrees. This hogshead fermentation generally causes the colour of the tobacco to become more uniform and also develops the aroma and flavour of the tobacco.
