The term cigar (the same applies to cigarette) has reached us via the term siccari of the late scholars' Latin. The scientists of the 17th century wrote folia siccari permissa, i.e. leaves which had been cured, concerning the origin word cigar ciq. The emphasis on curing the leaves (as speciality) was justified because the Red Indians treated tobacco mostly only by green fermentation or formed it in semi-moist condition into shapes similar to carrots or magnotes. The generic term "cigar" covers, in addition to actual cigars which as a rule consist of filler, binder, wrapper, also cigarillos and cheroots. Cigar manufacture. History: Cigars were twisted by hand natives of Central America for their own use. Dometrio Pela of Cuba reported in 1541 that the Red Indian chief Panduka showed him how to twist cigars. Pela then took up large-scale manufacture. From Cuba, which can be regarded as the classical country of cigar production the cigar made its way to Spain. Since 1720 cigars were made in fairly large quantities in Sevilla on an industrial scale. Heinrich Schlottmann learned there how to make cigars and founded in 1788 in Hamburg the first cigar factory in Germany.
