Auteur : Fandrich-Zwyssig, Marie-Thérèse,Note :
The reading stand or pupitre was made in every conceivable form, either to stand alone or incorporated in furniture that was quite alien to reading, such as toilet tables or fire screens. The vogue for all kinds of tables à pupitre dates from around 1750 onwards. The majority were designed as tables de dames, but lecterns were also occasionnaly found in large masculine desks. Work tables with an adjustable easel so that the top could be raised to form a reading stand or perhaps on which to write a brief note were very fashionable and choice articles of furniture. They combined the purpose of a chiffonnière and a small desk.
