Les grandes différences de fréquences suivant les populations laissent à penser que l'influence des facteurs de milieu peut être ici importante (en particulier l'alimentation et les facteurs socio-économiques). D'autre part, on a constaté de façon certaine une diminution de fréquence de ce type de cancer dans certains pays, valable surtout pour les sujets jeunes. Les lésions susceptibles de dégénérescence cancéreuse sont les ulcères gastriques, la polypose, la gastrite atrophique. Les signes fonctionnels sont souvent discrets et d'apparence banale; douleurs épigastriques, vagues troubles digestifs, anémie. Ils doivent néanmoins conduire à un examen radiologique du transit gastrique.

In most instances, cancers of the stomach are adenocarcinomas that arise from the mucus-secreting cells of the stomach lining and vary only in their degree of differentiation. They can arise in the upper, middle, or lower sections of the stomach and extend along its surface or travel to other sections. Occasionally, lymphomas or sarcomas also occur in the stomach. Surgery is the treatment of choice and may be temporarily helpful. In about nine per cent of persons in whom the cancer is identified at an early stage, surgery may be curative. Lymphomas can sometimes be successfully treatment with radiation.
