The leaves are far apart on the stem, have long stalks, are round/oval, yellow-green to dark-green, nearly at right angles from the stem. Side ribs nearly horizontal to the strong main rib. The stem begins to branch out just above ground level. Colour of blossoms yellow to yellowish-green, blossom blown open with five-lobed wavy edge. It is called "violet" tobacco after the characteristic violet scent which clings to the leaves even after fermentation. It is grown in South America, Africa, Central Asia and South-East Europe, and also in Poland and the Soviet Union. Types with high nicotine content are used for the production of nicotine.
