In practice the terms upper motion and lower motion are also used to refer to the clamps and tangent screws controlling the motions. For instance, when the lower clamp is tightened, it is said, "the lower motion is clamped"; and when the upper clamp is loosened, it is said, "the upper motion is unclamped". Or when a sight is taken with the upper clamp tightened and the lower clamp loosened, it is said, "a sight taken by means of the lower motion".
