  The development and use of of standards is primarilya consensus process, where standards attain useful status or credibility by how widely accepeted they have become. So the establishment of standards is evolutionary. A number of organizations are involved in developing formal standards in the IT industry. Some are= voluntary standards organizations (such as ISO, CCITT, IEEE...) government bodies others are industry organizations / (MAP/TOP) /, and vendor organizations / (OSF, X/OPEN, UI)/ .
