  The development and use of of standards is primarily a consensus process, where standards attain useful status or credibility by how widely accepeted they have become. So the establishment of standards is evolutionary. A number of organizations are involved in developing formal standards in the IT industry. Some are= voluntary standards organizations (such as ISO, CCITT, IEEE,...) government bodies others are industry organizations / (MAP/TOP) /, and vendor organizations / (OSF, X/OPEN, UI)/ .
