Cacheing systems can help in other ways too. For example, suppose that DOS writes a file out to disk. The data in the file might correspond to several disk sectors spread all over the disk. In order to optimise performance, some buffered-write systems reorganise the order in which the data is written to the disk so that the disk head can keep moving in one direction (outward or inward) rather than moving backwards and forwards over the disk surface. This technique is called 'elevator seeking'.
