  Note :

  In a "monotonic" system, once a "fact" has been established it must remain true. However, depending upon the control strategy used, it may be possible for the antecedents of some "rule" to be true and for the conclusion to contradict some previously established fact. A truth maintenance system is a system that addresses this problem and ensures the monotonicity of the system. It may do this by simply refusing to "assert" such conclusions, or by determining which of the inconsistent expressions should be deleted.
