Structuralism in a general sense can be applied to the study of linguistic systems in terms of elements and their patterns of contrast and combination, reflecting the influence of Ferdinand de Saussure.
More specifically, the label has been applied to the school of structuralist linguists associated with L. Bloomfield. The approach emphasised segmentation and classification of linguistic units at syntactic, morphemic, phonemic and phonetic levels based on the outward form of utterances rather than their underlying structures, an aspect which formed part of Chomsky's detailed critique.Terme :
