  A neurotrophic factor which was discovered in 1990 and which is said to belong to the "true" neurotrophin family.
  
  NT-3's preferred receptor is probably on the motor neurons of the corticospinal tracts. NT-3 also promotes the survival of some sensory neurons, notably those governing proprioception (limb movement and position), and appears to protect peripheral neurons from damage by the anticancer drug cisplatin as well as dopaminergic nigrostriatal (Parkinson's disease) neurons from toxic or surgical damage.
