A mechanically produced series of equally-spaced parallel lines, used to distinguish particular areas of a map by providing a paler shade of the full printing colour.
Note :
More than one single ruling may be used, different shades being obtained by varying the weight and proximity of the lines, which are usually specified by the number of lines to the inch. The ruling is carried on a Line Screen Hence diagonal ruling in which the angle of ruling is 45° (clockwise or anti-clockwise) from the horizontal, unless some other angle is specified.
