Définition :
Caisse de bois sculpté qui s'ouvre en soulevant le couvercle. Du Moyen Âge jusqu'à la Renaissance, le coffre a été le meuble de rangement par excellence. Après quoi, il fut remplacé par l'armoire.

Medieval literature contains innumerable references to receptacles designated both chests and coffers, where coffers are chests of small size. The distinction depends on the shape of the lid. A chest has a straight and flat cover while a coffer has a circular lid or cover. Other authors say that the receptacles of wood are called chests while the term coffer is reserved for travelling chests, known as trunks.
