Définition :
Terre argileuse fine, habituellement rougeâtre ou orangée, coloration naturelle causée par la présence d'oxyde de fer.
Note :
Mélangée à du blanc d'œuf et appliquée sur une surface de bois, cette argile constitue une base lisse pour l'application d'une feuille d'or.

A fine earthy clay, usually naturally stained with iron oxide to a reddish or orangish colour.
Note :
This, when ground with diluted egg white and applied to a wood surface, makes a smooth ground for the laying of gold leaf. In very early times, terre verte (a pale green earth) was ground in this way and used as bole. The purpose of the red-orange bole is to give brilliance and warmth to the gold.
