((...)) instrument used to ascertain the breaking strength of papers, i.e. what strain, expressed in weight, is required to break, say, a strip of paper of given length & width, and also the percentage of strecth in the paper under that load. The usual type of instrument used for this purpose, and also to ascertain the amount of stretch caused in the paper by the tension, is that in which strips of paper of a fixed breadth (say 15 mm. or about 9/16ths. of an inch broad and 180 mm. or 7" long) cut from the paper in both machine and cross direction are attached top and bottom to clamps or grips in the apparatus. The lower clamp is pulled down at a regular speed (by electric motor), the strip pulls down the clamp to which the upper end is attached, transmitting the movement to a weighted lever. The greater the resistance of the specimen being tested, the further the lever will be pulled out of the vertical. When the test-strip breaks, the lever remains fixed and indicates on a quadrant scale the force (in lb. or kg.) required to break it, i.e. the "breaking strain", while a second, smaller quadrant indicates in % the increase in length of the strip under tension, i.e. the amount of "tensile stretch" in the paper up to the moment of breaking.
