Ces vannes sont appelées souvent improprement vannes secteur; nous préférons la dénomination de vanne segment, car la partie utile est effectivement un segment de cylindre et non pas un secteur. Le nom de vanne secteur sera réservé pour les vannes à commande hydraulique utilisant un secteur de cylindre.

A crest gate whose face is a section of a cylinder, which rotates about a horizontal axis downstream from the gate, the water pressure against te gate being concentrated in the axis, reducing friction in raising and lowering the fate a seal is placed along the sides and bottom of the gate face for water-tghtness. The gate is raised and lowered by winches or hoists attached to cables or chains fastened to the bottom edge of the gate and lying against its water face, which allows a vertical lifting force to be applied. It can be closed under its own weight.
