The settle is "a wooden bench with arms, a solid back and an enclosed foundation which can be a chest".
Note :
In early inventories the terms settle and bench are interchangeable, but the distinctive character of the settle is the presence of arms... As there was generally a locker beneath the seat, it may be taken to have originated in the chest.
