Originally a woollen cloth of 2/2 twill woven in checks of various colours and worn chiefly by the Scottish Highlanders, each clan having its district pattern. Originally, Scotch plaid in woollens or worsteds in the distinctive designsand colors of Highlands clans.
Notes :
Used for children's wear in particular, also women's sportswear.
The correct word is "tartan" and not "plaid" or "plad". The plaid is a long heavy blanket-like garment, usually, but not necessarily, of tartan.
