Définition :
Ensemble des manifestations oculaires causées par l'avitaminose A, y compris la kératomalacie.
Note :
McLaren et al. entendent par « xérophtalmie », en dépit de son étymologie, l'ensemble des manifestations cliniques accompagnant les formes graves de l'avitaminose A, et non pas le seul syndrome oculaire. Ils suggèrent donc d'employer, pour la description des lésions oculaires, des termes plus spécifiques, à savoir « xérosis conjonctival » et « xérosis cornéen ».

Note :
McLaren et al. used this term with the broader vitamin A deficiency. The authors comment as follows: "Although etymologically only eye involvement is implied, in common medical parlance an advanced state of generalized hypovitaminosis A is understood". It is "xerosis" be used in describing the actual state of the eye itself and that "xerophthalmia" be reserved for the syndrome.
