In general, however, the change from a normal to a malignant cell involves some degree of loss of the special functions of the normal cells, a process known as dedifferenciation, and it is significant that the greater the degree of such dedifferenciation, the nearer (as a rule) does the cell tend to approach an embryonic type and greater is its rate of growth. It is of much interest that the malignant cell exhibits biochemical dedifferenciation also, and that in their enzymatic and related properties cancer cells tend to resemble one another more closely than do their normal counter-parts.
