Alkylating agents are compounds that form highly reactive intermediates capable of attacking molecules possessing nucleophilic centres (reactive protons). The reactive forms of alkylating agents contain alkyl moieties that are inserted into the attacked molecule, accounting for the designation "alkylating agents". /.../ Alkylating agents that are sufficiently absorbed to be administered orally include: cyclophosphamide, melphalan, chlorambucil, uracil mustard, busulfan, procarbazine, CCNU, and methyl CCNU. The group of tumours in the treatment of which alkylating agents may be useful include Hodgkin's disease and other malignant lymphomas, acute and chronic leukemias, mycosis fungoides, polycythemia vera.
