A number of alkaloids with antitumour activity have been obtained from the periwinkle, Vinca rosea Linn. Two of these, vinblastine and vincristine, are in clinical use. Their chemical structures are identical except that vincristine contains a formyl group in the position occupied by a methyl group in vinblastine. This single chemical substitution confers significant differences upon their therapeutic and toxic properties.
