La communauté thérapeutique se différencie des autres formes comparables de traitement par le fait qu'elle réunit toutes les sources et tous les moyens d'une institution - collaborateurs et patients - pour favoriser le traitement d'une manière autocritique et réflective.
Martin ajoute qu'une communauté dans laquelle un effort adéquat est entrepris pour tirer profit de toutes les contributions de l'état-major et des patients à l'intérieur d'un vaste plan de traitement.
