Large shark (Alopias vulpinus) nearly cosmopolitan in distribution that is distinguished by the greatly elongated curved upper lobe of its tail with which it is said to thresh the water to round up the fish on which it feeds and that is highly regarded as a sport fish and in some areas used as food.
