Salts of nitric acid (HNO3) occur in nature as Chile saltpetre, sodium nitrate (NaNO3) and as potassium nitrate (KNO3).
Note :
The important potassium nitrate is technically produced also by reciprocal action from artificial sodium nitrate and potassium chloride (KCI). Other nitrates (ammonium nitrate) are today of the utmost importance as potassium nitrate as fertilizer especially for tobacco, potassium, nitrogen. Nitre solutions which are sometimes used for treating smoking tobaccos in the hot dipping process to improve their glowing capacity. The nitrate content of the solution should not exceed 5%, otherwise the flavour of the tabacco would suffer. Nitre was formerly used for hihly combustible cigarette papers to prevent ash peeling off. Such papers were described as "nitrated" it is no longer used besause of their tang.
