Original name for smoking tobaccos which were based on light batches Varinas, Porto-Rico cutting, Maturin and similar tobaccos and were later replaced by lighter woolly Java tobaccos.
Notes :
The names Canaster, porto-Rico and Varinas are now mostly names for pipes tobaccos which in flavour ar similar to the original types.
The word Canaster goes back to the Spanish word canastro (= basket) because the above-mentioned smoking tobaccos were formerly exported in baskets.Termes :
