Date :Définition
A red pipe stone found in North America from which the bowl of a Red Indian peace pipe (Calumet) is frequently made.
Note :
The catlinit quarries worked by Red Indians, were called after the American scientist George Catlin (1796-1872). They are in the Sioux territory between Dakota and Minnesota (near the present township of Pipestone). Only the quarry at Pipestone is now used for pipe manufacture and this might now be described as an American national monument. A few Sioux Red Indians still make Kalumets (peace pipes) and other carving from the soft Catlinit. According to an old saga, the great spirit of Manitu was said to have appeared in this quarry befor the warning Red Indian tribes. According to the saga, he showed them the peace pipe made of red stone and taught them how to make and smoke it.
