Définition

Removal of the main stem of tobacco leaves by specially constructed stemming machines. Such stemming machines only remove the main stem while leaving the remaining half of leaves intact so that these parts of leaves can be used for wrappers and binders. Stemming machines which do not remove the main stem only but more or less tear also the leaf to pieces are used in the production of smoking tobacco and cigarettes (cut tobacco or rag) and in cigar factories for the manufacture of filler tobacco.
