From the term baucher = to design, to fabricate in the raw state, etc., mean stumps cut by highly specialised "coupeurs" from the Bruyère root.
Note :
They differ in size and type of cut to correspond to the format of the tobacco pipes to be made from them. Grading is carried out by internationally recognised standards (marked by letters and numbers). Grading symbols are: C = Cuty, M = Marseillese, R = Rélé; suffixes P = Petit, F = Forte. Mixed grades are marked by combining several letters, e.g. RF, CMP, etc. and the dimensions by figures 1 to 5 where mixtures can also occur (e.g. 1-2, 3-4, etc.). To protect the ebauchons against cracking they are boiled in large vats (for up to 20 hours) and then carefully cooled and dried. Packing, storage and dispatch is in bales or sacks. Each bale contains 12 to 132 dozen ebauchons depending on the size of the cuts of the stumps. The unit employed for measuring the size is called Ligne (1 Ligne = 12 Points = 2.25 mm). The names Carré and Tige are used for cigar holders. The qualities are classified as Extra, Prima, Secunda.
