The narrow tube connecting the yolk sac (umbilical vesicle) with the midgut of the early embryo, which becomes incorporated into the embryo and usually undergoes complete obliteration, but occasionally persists in the embryo, and rarely is found in the adult as a diverticulum from the small intestine (Meckel's diverticulum).
