  Are the short stretches of 1000-2000 bases that are produced during discontinuous replication; they are later joined into a covalently intact strand ((and)) they have a short stretch of RNA at their 5' phosphate ends which is used as a primer for the initiation of new DNA molecules (terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase).
