Définition :
Hypothèse, actuellement bien confirmée par les observations, qui précise les règles selon lesquelles s'effectue la reconnaissance des codons de l'ARN messager par les anticodons des ARN de transfert.
Note :
Selon cette hypothèse, l'appariement des deux premières bases respecte toujours la complémentarité classique : adénine-uracile, guanine-cytosine, mais, au niveau de la troisième base, la complémentarité peut être moins rigide. L'uracile peut s'apparier avec l'une ou l'autre des deux purines : adénine et guanine et l'inosine, base modifiée dérivée de la guanine que l'on trouve dans certains anticodons, peut s'apparier non seulement avec la cytosine, mais aussi avec l'uracile et l'adénine. Cette hypothèse prévoit que certains ARN de transfert peuvent reconnaître jusqu'à 3 codons différents.

An explanation of how a specific transfer RNA (tRNA) molecule can translate different codons in a messenger RNA template: there is some looseness in the alignment that allows the third base of the anticodon to pair with a base other than its normal complementary base.
Note :
Other than the normal complementary pairs of guanine (G), with cytosine (C) and adenine with uracil (U), G pairs with U, U pairs with G, and I (inosine) pairs with A, U, or C, where the first base of these pairs is the third base of the anticodon. On exception to these pairing rules is tRNA Gly111 with anticodon CCA, which recognizes the codon GGC.
