A term used in reference to a metal to define the property by virtue of which it opposes the flow of electricity through it. Materials having a low or very low resistance are in general termed conductors. A conductor has a resistance of 1 c.g.s electromagnetic unit, if a potential difference of 1 e.m.u. applied to its ends causes a current of 1 e.m.u. to flow through it. The practical unit is the ohm: a conductor has a resistance of 1 ohm if a potential drop of 1 volt applied to its ends causes a current of 1 amp. to flow through it.
