  Note :

  These usually serve as a reliable means of identifying similar surviving wares, but it is important to distinguish between shards found at a kiln-site, which are likely (but not necessarily) to be pieces from that factory (see WASTER), and those discovered on dumps which may be from other sources, not even nearby. Shards were sometimes ground up and used instead, of GROG when mixing a body; this minimized subsequent shrinkage while preserving a similarity of composition.
