A term used in rheology to describe a phenomenon characteristic of highly concentrated suspensions of solids in liquids.
Notes :
Dilatant materials are particle suspensions which are deflocculated and are in a settled state of minimum voids. An attempt to make such a system flow dilates the voids and thereby increases the resistance to flow. Also the material takes on a dry appearance when pressure is applied to it.
For instance, rubber-solvent doughs, stiff paint formulations, and the like. If a deforming force is applied quickly, the flow response decreases, that is, the system resists the deforming stress; if the stress is applied gradually, the resistance drops, and flow rate increases.Terme :
