Définition :
Acier effervescent pour lequel la période de calmage est réduite soit en couvrant le lingot par un chapeau en fonte soit chimiquement, par une addition (habituellement d'aluminium ou d'un autre désoxydant) effectuée dans le lingot un peu après la fin du remplissage et avant que la peau du lingot soit entièrement formée.
Note :
Compromis qui, par rapport à l'acier effervescent, assure au lingot une peau plus saine, tout en permettant une teneur en carbone plus faible et une ségrégation, du soufre, en particulier, moindre.

A rimming steel in which the rimming period is shortened by mechanically capping the ingot with a cast iron lid or chemically by an addition of aluminium (usually) or other deoxidiser to the top of the ingot shortly after casting is complete and before the rim structure is completely formed.
Note :
This is a compromise to obtain the benefits of a rim and a smaller degree of carbon and sulphur segregation than would be obtained if rimming was allowed to proceed to completion.
