An alloy of iron and manganese (80 to 90% Mn) used in iron, steel and copper alloy foundries.

There is a variety of white iron in which manganese is present as an essential constituent. It contains carbon in amounts which can vary from 3.5 to 6%, practically all of which is in the combined form. It is called spiegel or specular iron and is hard and brittle. Its specific gravity is approximately 7.6. When this alloy contains more than about 25% Mn it attains a granular structure and is termed ferromanganese.
Manganese combines with sulphur. It is a carbide stabilizer.Termes :
