Quantité de chaleur nécessaire pour élever d'un degré la température d'une masse de matière donnée.
Énergie calorifique qu'il faut fournir à un corps pour élever sa température de 1 °C.
Note :
Pour un gaz, on distingue la capacité calorifique à volume constant et la capacité calorifique à pression constante. Capacités calorifiques à 20 °C : eau : 4 180 J/kg °C; fer : 480 J/kg °C; béton : 880 J/kg °C; air : 1 000 J/kg °C.
