Requirement for high alloy steel castings are included in BS 3100, section 4. They specify a chromium content higher than 11 % and generally nickel over 8 %.

A distinction can be made between low alloy steel and high alloy steel. The boundary is at c. 5% in total content of alloy substances excluding carbon.
