Date :Définition
The skin of an animal treated with a chemical (tanning agent) which protects the protein (collagen) fibers from degradation due to bacteria, increases the strength, and maintains the flexible, microporous nature of the skin indefinitely. The tanning process involves cross-linking and coordination reactions, depending on the type of agent used (vegetable or metallic).
Notes :
Leather for books is derived from four animals: the goat giving Morocco leather; the calf providing natural calf or law calf, dyed calf and vellum; the sheep providing basil and roan for account books and second quality books, and parchment and forel for less robust work; and pig which provides a skin which theoretically is the strongest.
The hair or wool may or may not have been removed. Leather is also made from a hide or skin which has been split into layers or segmented either before or after tanning, but if the tanned hide or skin is disintegrated mechanically and/or chemically into fibrous particles, small pieces or powders and then, with or without the combination of a binding agent, is made into sheets or other forms, such sheets or forms are not leather.Terme :
