The phenomenon of change of dimensions with magnetisation.
Change in physical dimensions due to a magnetic field.Note :
When a ferromagnetic substance is magnetised, there occurs, in general, a change in volume as well as of shape; the material may swell, stretch or bend, and twist; on the other hand, mechanical deformations produce profound changes in magnetic properties, especially as regards to magnetisation; if a material changes by relatively large amount when magnetised to saturation, it is said to be strain sensitive, strain sensitivity and magnetostriction being reciprocal properties; the highest initial permeabilities are found in materials having very small magnetostriction; in iron-nickel alloys the saturation magnetostriction varies with the percentage of nickel, and is zero when nickel = 81%; the strain-sensitivity of permalloys is zero when nickel = 81%.
