Industrie qui groupe les différentes opérations qui ont pour objet : a) l'extraction des métaux à partir des minerais, b) l'affinage des métaux bruts ainsi obtenus pour en éliminer les impuretés nuisibles, c) l'élaboration d'alliages, par fusion de différents métaux pour obtenir des propriétés particulières, d) les traitements chimiques, thermiques, mécaniques de ces métaux ou alliages pour leur donner une forme ou des qualités déterminées.

A term of wide meaning, embracing the practice and science of extracting metals from their ores, the refining of crude metal, the production of alloys and the study of their constitution, structure and properties, and the relationship of physical and mechanical properties, to thermal and mechanical treatment of metals and alloys.
Notes :
It is generally considered to comprise the following subdivisions: mining and ore separate (extractive metallurgy); alloying, fabrication, and testing (physical metallurgy): and manufacture and fabrication of metal powders (powder metallurgy).
The methodology of metallurgy is derived from both physics and chemistry.
