Date :Définition
The product of the iron blast furnace. It results from the reduction of iron ore in which process coke and limestone are required, the former for the reduction and the latter to produce a slag in which most of the impurities are removed. The name is derived from the fact that the metal is cast into horizontal ingots called "pigs". It is used as the raw material for making steel and in iron founding. It usually contains 2.5 - 5% C, 1 - 3% Si, with varying amounts of manganese, sulphur and phosphorus which originate either in the ore itself or are picked up from the coke.
