The property a substance has of containing commuted air voids. It is dependent upon the number of the voices and their distribution in size, shape, and orientation. Porosity is commonly evaluated by determining the air permeability of the specimen.
Permeability of paper to air flow in the 2 direction under controlled conditions. The two important control conditions are area of sample and pressure of air.
For uncoated papers the porosity is an indication of the capillary action of the pores and fibers in the paper and their relation for the absorption of the printing inks.
Porosity, as a specified property means the ratio of pore volume to the total volume of the material.Note :
Porosity is frequently used in paper parlance as a synonym of air permeability. This is a very loose and unfortunate usage.
