The smallest of the three dimensions (usually expressed in thousandths of an inch) of a single sheet of paper or paperboard when measured under specific conditions of area and pressure. It is also called caliper.

A generic term for single sheet thickness and bulking thickness.

Thickness may be defined as the distance between two parallels concentrically arranged, plane surfaces, usually circular in shape, when pressed with a specified pressure against opposite sides of a paper test specimen, which may consist of a single sheet or a stack of several sheets.
