A processed image on a sensitized material in which the dark portions of the original appear light, and the light portions dark.

Note :

Negatives are usually prepared on a film or glass base that has been sentitized with an emulsion coating containing finely dispersed silver salts. The clear or bright areas of the original transmit more light to the corresponding areas on the sensitized emulsion activating it so that on development, the greatest density of silver or blackening occurs when the exposure to light is also greatest.
