The normal oxides of metals (i.e. those in which the metal shows its normal valency) are usually basic, dissolving in acids to form salts ((...)). Most metals from an oxide skin on exposure to the atmosphere, and the tenacity, permeability and hardness of this skin is responsible for the intrinsic corrosion behaviour of the metal.
