Generally rectangular section preformed shape made from silica by mixing the latter with suitable binding agent (usually cream of lime) and firing in a kiln.

Such bricks are tender when cold. They expand considerably on heating and are then less tender when cold. They are used in building the roofs of reverberatory and regenerative furnaces, but are unsuitable for such parts of furnaces as are in contact with basic materials or slags.
